This afternoon the children and staff went to St Giles’ Church for an afternoon focusing on the upcoming period of Lent. The afternoon focused on four main areas:
· Listening – Lent is for hearing God
· Lengthening – Preparing for Christian living
· Letting go – A focus on Shrove Tuesday
· Keeping going – Lent is for all of life
The four stations were set up around the church and the children were in four groups. They spent time at each of the stations and took part in the activities which were all set around the theme of going on a journey.
‘Lent is sometimes thought of as a journey, not with people travelling from one place to another but travelling through a length of time.’
Each activity gave opportunity for making connections, learning and thinking, reflecting and responding.
‘Christians believe Jesus died and rose again so that they could be close to God. In response to this wonderful gift, Christians then aim to spend their lives following the example of the way Jesus lived.’
The children appeared to enjoy the afternoon and some of the responses received were:
“We were worshipping God.”
“The Lent afternoon was perfect in every way.”
“I really liked eating the hot cross buns, because they had a cross on them and Jesus died on the cross!”
“I enjoyed writing my passport and drawing a picture.”
