Bikeability

On Wednesday 6th July the year 3,4 and 5 children undertook their level one bikeability in the school yard under the watchful eye of Nichola Dick.

This involved learning how to check that their bike was road worthy prior to a journey, checking the tyres, brakes, chain and handlebars. It also included skills like braking smoothly, dismounting on the correct side, riding with one hand, looking over their shoulder, controlling speed etc.

The session lasted two hours and included lots of cycling through cones, around different tracks which simulate various road types. The children even took part in races, which provided an environment to practice the skills they had been taught earlier in the day. The winner was the slowest who had managed to cross the winning line without putting their feet down. This demonstrated control and balance.

Some children undertook the session on a scooter due to not having a road worthy bike. This was still a worth while lesson on how to keep safe and prepare themselves for a journey on the road, although they found it a little more tiring than pedalling a bike and there were a few moans about aching legs by the end of the session.
