St Giles Church Flower Festival set to celebrate Ruby Anniversary

Hartington Flower Festival 3

Volunteers in Hartington are looking for local people to get involved in a project to celebrate 40 years of the village’s church Flower Festival.

Representatives from St Giles Church are hoping to commemorate the milestone year by pulling together local memories from the first Flower Festival held in the village in 1976.

They want to know about weddings at the church 40 years ago; babies born in 1976 and christened there; if village businesses were the same as today; any special celebrations that may have taken place throughout the year; what the weather was like during the summer and winter months of 1976 and any photos people may wish to share.

Member of St Giles Parochial Church Council, Sarah Lacey said: “John Keats once said a thing of beauty is a joy forever and that is why in our fortieth year we want everyone to join in and celebrate this special community event. We want to make this year even more beautiful and joyful than ever.”

Vice Chair of the Governors of Hartington C of E Primary School, Liz Broomhead MBE added: “I am delighted to confirm that the now annual and very popular maypole dancing by the children of the school will take place on the Saturday of Flower Festival, the 28th of May at 2pm. I really do look forward to seeing many local faces there, and visitors to our lovely village.”

To get involved email Liz Broomhead on liz@broomhead.net.

People can also leave information and comments in marked boxes at Sue Peach’s newsagents, the Post Office and Village Stores. Any details are needed by Saturday 30th April in order for volunteers to compile ready for the festival.
